2019 Aro Fair
The annual Aro Fair was held on Saturday 23 March 2019, in the Aro Valley Community Centre and Aro Park, 48 Aro Street.
The Fair was enormously successful, with close to 5,000 people enjoying the entertainment, stalls and activities throughout the day. Fair manager Lexi Taylor says, “The fair is the pinnacle event of the year where everyone in the community can get together. This brings to a close an excellent summer of events”.
Features were top notch food trucks and two stages with bands and musicians entertained throughout the day. Acts included Wellington stage regulars, youth bands, local Aro Valley punk music and middle-aged laments from Aro Video owner Andrew Armitage. People participated in a collaborative mural painting and kids enjoyed both a Ferris wheel and bouncy castle.
An extra feature was “Alien Junk Monsters” at midday who upstaged the entire fair with a spectacular show of percussion and costumes created from recycled waste. A special acknowledgement of the Christchurch shootings opened the event with waiata and a minute’s silence for the victims.
Aro Street set a new record in the water balloon toss for the Arolympics competition, and surprisingly an egg and spoon race made its way into the schedule this year. Tahiti Samina said of the sporting event, “Arolympics is such a very good part of the Aro Fair, Stephen and Kelvin were so funny and professional”.
Te Aro School and Aro Valley Preschool had many stalls at the event and were very pleased with the high level of sales from the many attendees. The Aro Valley Community Council “Republic of Aro Valley” T shirts were also selling like hotcakes. Wild Aro, Te Aro School and Aro Valley Preschool were very happy with their fundraising efforts.
In typical Aro Valley style, the community members present took the chance to discuss local issues and celebrate the things we share.
Thanks to Aro Valley Community Council and Wellington City Council and all the amazing volunteers and businesses who make it happen!

AROLYMPICS
The ArOlympics are a test of grit, determination, strength and sheer willpower. Pitting neighbour against neighbour in a bid to take home gold. The festivities begin on the Friday night before the Aro Fair with a torch relay through the Valley and a celebration. Only one team can take home the glory. Who will it be this year? |
