ARO VALLEY COMMUNITY CENTRE

What dreams MAY come...

Welcome to May in the Aro Valley!

There go the leaves with longer days well behind us now. It's tough out there at the moment, so prepare your nest if you can as it will be even tougher when the weather turns cold. Share warm vibes with each other!

This month we have two special events at the hall;

- On the 21st of May we're hosting a community discussion on the New Zealand documentary series "Stalked" featuring Zeni Gibson and hosted by MP Tamatha Paul from 7pm onwards.

- On the 30th of May we're doing an NZ Music month "Musical instrument fixit fair" special from 11am -4pm with a special Trash Planet concert from 7pm -11pm.

Regular classes proceed as usual, check our schedule below to see what's on in the hall.

Finally, the May Valley Voice is now available! Out now and available online and at the Garage Project Cellar Door and Taproom, Aro Cafe, AroBake, Te Aro Fish Supply, Hair on Aro, Aro Video, Octo, and in your letterbox.

Kia ora tātou, Unacceptable Behaviour

A three-part New Zealand documentary series, Stalked, will screen on Sky Open and NEON from 4–6 May. The series shares the experiences of women who have been subjected to stalking, highlighting the impact of this behaviour in Aotearoa and the ongoing need for stronger protections. One of the women featured is Zeni Gibson, a previous member of the Aro Valley community, who experienced stalking over a number of years. We acknowledge the courage it takes to speak publicly about experiences like this, and we  recognise the contribution this makes to broader awareness and change. As a committee, we are mindful that this topic is distressing and we remain committed to supporting Aro Valley as a safe, connected, and community-minded place to live.
Our local MP and Valley Voice columnist Tamatha Paul led an amendment strengthening legislation that made stalking a criminal offence in Aotearoa NZ from May 2026. The Aro Valley Community Committee made a submission in support of this change. While this represents a positive step towards a safer Aotearoa, we recognise that there is still more to be done. The AVCC is hosting a community discussion at the hall with Tamatha Paul at 7pm on Thursday 21st May, to reflect on these developments and what they mean for our community.
